HIFU is a non-surgical, skin tightening treatment that uses High Intensity Focused Ultrasound which can be adapted to target varying depths of the skin.
Also known as the ‘lunchtime face lift’, this treatment can address areas of loose or sagging skin on the face and neck.
Lifting the skin on the face can help to improve the visible signs of ageing, for a firmer and more youthful complexion.
The skin starts to lose elasticity as we age and when combined with a declining production of collagen, can result in the skin losing firmness and volume. This can then lead to the facial features changing in definition as the skin develops lines and wrinkles and becomes loose around the cheeks, jawline and brows.
By tightening the skin and restoring the contouring of the face it can help to improve the texture of the complexion and reverse the signs of an ageing appearance.
The treatment involves moving a handheld device over the areas of concern, which works to target the SMAS layer of the skin’s structure (a layer of tissue that is located deep within the skin). Delivering ultrasound energy stimulates the fibroblasts which helps to remodel collagen in the skin, as well as helping fatty tissue to contract.
Working from the inside out, it is these effects that enables the surface layer of the skin to effectively lift and tighten. The results produce a smoother texture of the skin, with restored contouring of the face.
Although a great treatment for reducing a variety of common facial concerns, including: lines and wrinkles, jowls, nasolabial folds, double chin and loose skin on the cheeks, HIFU can also be used to improve loose skin on other areas of the body.

Frequently asked questions
Am I suitable for HIFU?
HIFU is likely to be a suitable treatment for you if you are affected by skin on the face and / or neck that is showing signs of lost elasticity. This treatment can be effective on all skin types and is kind to sensitive skin. Attending a consultation at Ambra Facial Aesthetic Clinic will recommend whether you are a candidate for HIFU.
Is HIFU safe?
HIFU is CE registered and is therefore considered to be a safe treatment. Many patients prefer to undergo HIFU in preference to having a surgical face lift due to its effective results, minus its invasive procedure and lengthy recovery time.
Is HIFU painful?
Each patient’s experiences are different and the level of sensitivity felt can often depend on the depth within the skin’s layers that HIFU was used to target. Most patients find this treatment a tolerable experience, with no lingering discomfort. If sensitivity is felt your practitioner can advise on ways to soothe and calm the skin.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with HIFU?
It is common for patients to experience swelling, redness and blotchy skin at the treatment site, immediately following the procedure. In some rarer cases numbness, hyperpigmentation and no outcome has occurred. Your practitioner can advise on the specifics of possible side effects from undergoing this procedure.
What downtime can I expect from HIFU?
As its alternative name (the lunchtime facelift) indicates, HIFU produces no downtime. Any swelling and redness will have subsided within a few hours, but should not get in the way of you continuing with your day.
